THE SIESTA

figurative contemporary painting oil on canvas

50 X 150 cm

With The Siesta, Frédérique Torres captures a moment of interrupted intimacy, at the precise point where rest shifts toward awakening. The female figure, asleep, is abruptly pulled out of her dreams by the sharp sound of a breaking branch, caused by a young monkey concealed within the setting. This discreet yet essential narrative detail introduces a rupture between the surrender of sleep and the return to consciousness.
The monkey, an instinctive and mischievous figure, acts as a symbolic trigger. It embodies the wild, unpredictable element that emerges within the dream. Its gesture disrupts the intimacy of the scene and marks the end of an inner refuge, drawing the figure out of her dreams and nightmares.
The lush setting visually translates this mental state. The chromatic gradient, moving from luminous yellow to deep black, accompanies the transition from dream to wakefulness. Bat flowers, dense vegetation, and the painterly material evoke an inner landscape oscillating between comforting clarity and anxious darkness. The space becomes a reflection of psychic cycles, from the gentleness of imagination to the latent darkness of nightmares.
Through The Siesta, Frédérique Torres explores the fragility of moments of withdrawal from the world. The work is part of a contemporary figurative painting practice, in which the figure reveals the constant tension between surrender, vigilance, and awakening, intended for galleries, cultural institutions, and art collectors.
