Contemporary Figurative Paintings

This portfolio presents a selection of works by Frédérique Torres, a French contemporary figurative painter working primarily in oil on canvas.

Her paintings explore the female figure, embodied memory and intimacy through symbolic and introspective compositions.

Drawing from cultural imagery, organic landscapes and archetypal forms, her work develops a poetic reflection on visibility, interiority and transformation within contemporary figurative painting.

ROSELINE - FREDERIQUE TORRES -CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

ROSELINE - FREDERIQUE TORRES -CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas and gold leaf 116 × 89 cm Seated on the ground, Roseline embodies a silent and primordial presence. The nude body, neither offered nor idealized, unfolds within a time of innocence and awakening. Her gaze, directed toward the loved one, welcomes the first stirrings of emotion, while fragments of gold suggest an intimate revelation in progress. Frédérique Torres’s work captures the inaugural moment when a being discovers the capacity to love, in a quiet and intimate sense of wonder

TATOOED WOMAN- FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

TATOOED WOMAN- FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 73 × 92 cm This work presents a female figure seen from behind, inspired by the iconography of the geisha, whose body becomes a symbolic and narrative surface. Deliberately removed from any representation of desire, the figure becomes a site where personal and cultural traces are inscribed. The painting questions the visible and invisible marks that the body preserves and reveals from its own history.

WHERE THE EYES REST - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

WHERE THE EYES REST - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 90 × 90 cm The female figure adopts a restrained posture, the body slightly inclined forward. The hands crossed over the torso evoke a gesture of protection, poised between reserve and vigilance. The transparent blouse reveals the body without fully exposing it, creating a tension between modesty and exhibition. The frontal gaze engages the viewer in a silent exchange, asserting a conscious and self-assured presence.

ERASURE - FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

ERASURE - FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 46 × 55 cm Frédérique Torres evokes social pressure: the face remains visible while the body dissolves into ornament, suggesting a loss of identity in favor of social image. The act of erasure invites reflection on the mechanisms through which identity dissolves under excessive visibility.

NOTRE DAME - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

NOTRE DAME - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas and gold leaf 114 × 146 cm The work evokes the fire of Notre-Dame in April 2019. The frontal figure of the Virgin, inscribed within a circular form recalling the halo, the rose window and the reliquary of the Crown of Thorns, transforms the cathedral into a wounded body. The inverted face with closed eyes suggests the suspended time of restoration, while the multitude of eyes evokes the gaze of the world upon the tragedy.

THE MATERNITY - FREDERIQUE TORRES- PEINTURE FIGURATIVE CONTEMPORAINE

THE MATERNITY - FREDERIQUE TORRES- PEINTURE FIGURATIVE CONTEMPORAINE

Oil on canvas 50 × 150 cm A geisha carrying her child on her back, captured in a fleeting moment of tenderness.

YIN YANG- FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

YIN YANG- FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 89 × 116 cm The body, both substantial and vulnerable, inhabits a space of silence and restraint. Folded into itself, the woman adopts a closed, introspective posture, balanced between strength and fragility. The sensitive whiteness of the body dialogues with the deep black background, according to the principle of yin and yang, where opposites coexist without canceling one another.

GEISHA BACK VIEW - FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

GEISHA BACK VIEW - FREDERIQUE TORRES- CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 89 × 115 cm The whiteness of the makeup contrasts with the dark depth of the background, emphasizing the tension between codified appearance and concealed interiority. The back becomes a central narrative space, carrying a memory inscribed in the flesh. The work questions the duality between visibility and invisibility. This imagined geisha invites the viewer to discover what lies behind appearances.

OPHELIA- FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

OPHELIA- FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 60 × 120 cm Frédérique Torres does not depict the death of Ophelia but her slipping away: a moment of transition in which passion dissolves and the body becomes the site of an irreversible silence.

THE TEST OF TIME - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

THE TEST OF TIME - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas and gold leaf 81 × 99 cm Frédérique Torres invites the viewer to reflect on the weight of society within an inevitable cycle of metamorphosis. The nude woman sheds her artifices, while in the background an older female figure appears as her future double. Fragmentation, erasure and symbolic elements inscribe the female body within a slow transformation, confronting judgment and prompting reflection on the gradual disappearance of individuals within society.

THE SIESTA - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

LOVE - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 73 × 100 cm The work evokes a dialogue between East and West. The lotus, emerging from troubled waters, symbolizes resilience and spiritual permanence, while cherry blossoms recall the beauty of impermanence and renewal.

PROMISE OF A MORNING - FREDERIQUE TORRES CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 97 × 146 cm In this suspended moment between night and day, the female figure seen from behind embodies the fragile threshold of dawn, where contained emotion and emerging light together open the field of possibilities.

NUDE AMONG WATER LILIES - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

NUDE AMONG WATER LILIES - FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 90 × 116 cm A nude woman, folded into a posture of intimacy and protection, seems suspended between appearance and dissolution in contact with water. The tattoo acts as a second skin linking the body to water and to an organic cycle, while water lilies introduce a timeless and meditative atmosphere.

MISEDASHI - FREDERIQUE TORRES CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

MISEDASHI - FREDERIQUE TORRES CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 97 × 162 cm With Misedashi, the artist represents a foundational moment in the initiation ritual of the maiko. The tripartite composition articulates youth, transmission and continuity, while the lotus symbolizes inner transformation. The work questions the construction of feminine identity within the codified cultural framework of the geisha world.

THE BATH - FREDERIQUE TORRES CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

THE BATH - FREDERIQUE TORRES CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas 97X195cm The Bath captures a moment of withdrawal in which the partially immersed female body inhabits a suspended temporality. The gesture is simple and almost motionless: entering the water becomes an intimate, silent act removed from the external gaze. The enveloping water creates a protective space, while the lowered gaze preserves the figure’s interiority. The work evokes less a scene than a state — that of an intimate moment.

THE BIRTH- FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

THE BIRTH- FREDERIQUE TORRES - CONTEMPORARY FIGURATIVE PAINTING

Oil on canvas and gold leaf A female figure seen from the back emerges from a mineral and aquatic landscape in a slow movement of appearance. The work evokes the original threshold of conscious existence, where the body separates from matter and enters the world.
